T-yong Chung: Golden#Room

In occasione della sua seconda mostra personale presso SRISA Gallery of Contemporary Art a Firenze, T Yong Chung (Korea 1977), presenta un suggestivo allestimento ambientale. L'artista prosegue la sua ricerca basata sul recupero di materiali e oggetti di diversa provenienza che assemblati, secondo moduli casuali, rinascono intrisi di nuovo significato. 

Con questo lavoro l'artista decide di trasformare lo spazio espositivo in un ambiente che sembra raggelato fuori dal tempo in una dimensione dal sapore religioso. Nel centro la stanza presenta due piccole statue di Gesù e della Madonna che troneggiano sopra due colonne doriche. Il volto di entrambi è reciso con un taglio netto che lascia spazio a un profilo surreale. Intorno e atterra il dispanarsi di legni dorati ricavati da vecchi orpelli di sedie. 

Creare un ambiente ha portato l'artista a maturare la sua esperienza rispetto al concetto di assemblaggio. Gli oggetti anche se snaturati del valore, dialogano tra di loro esaltando il significato di una messa in scena ne drammatica ne ironica. T-Yong Chung fonde insieme le singole parti in maniera organica, sfruttando le tensioni che si innescano tra le forme e il valore simbolico dei vari elementi. 

Piuttosto che la ricerca del carattere sacro della scena e l'impatto quasi apocalittico, lo scopo insegue la casualità, e di essa si serve per amplificare il senso di spaesamento che essa può produrre . La stanza diventa la realizzazione tridimensionale di quel caliedoscopo che l'artista ama utilizzare agilmente nel suo linguaggio visivo. Il dubbio attivato con questo meccanismo spiazza lo spettatore verso una dimensione intima ma lontana da forme di giudizio.
 

For his second solo exhibition at SRISA Gallery of Contemporary Art in Florence, T-Yong Chung (Korea, 1977), presents a suggestive installation. The artist continues his research based on the recovery of materials and objects from diverse origins; which when reassembled, according to chance methodologies, take on new meaning.

With this work, the artist has decided to transform the exhibition space into an environment that seems frozen in a timeless dimension of religious import. In the center of the room there are two small statues of Jesus and Mary, who stand dominate atop two Doric columns. The faces of both have been severed with a clean cut that invokes a surreal profile. Surrounding this on the floor is the unraveling of gilded wood made ​​from old trappings of chairs.

The process of making created environments has allowed the artist to develop his experience in relation to the concept of assemblage. Even if the objects have been distorted of their original value, they still interact with each other and highlight the significance of the mise–en-scène, which is neither dramatic nor ironic. Chung blends together the individual parts in an organic manner, exploiting the tensions that are triggered between the forms and the symbolic value of the various elements.

Rather than search for the sacred meaning of the scene, or the almost apocalyptic impact of it, the aim seems to be much more about randomness, and it serves to amplify the sense of disorientation that it can produce. The room becomes a three-dimensional realization of that kaleidoscope that the artist likes to use in his visual language. The doubt triggered by this mechanism displaces the viewer towards an intimate dimension - one far from forms of judgment.
