About
Every year, the exiled residents of the depopulated village of Maalul and their descendants gather to celebrate Easter in the church of Maalul. Brought to life for this single occasion, the church lays empty and sealed all other days of the year, due to restrictions set by a neighbouring Israeli military base. More than a religious celebration, this event allows the people of Maalul to reenact the existence of their erstwhile community, displaced in 1948.
This year, we joined them.
The work is an impossible attempt to process this event, and the historical and political circumstances of which it is a product. But by which means can we approach these events and their implications six months after Easter and 70 years after the expulsion, in a different country and in a different language? In 'Events are Events', we seek to embody the disparities and resemblances between personal experience and representation in the media, between two over-exploited narratives, between virtuality and physical presence, body and language. Through sound, movement and GOOGLE, we impossibly endeavour to perform the events of Maalul.
'Events are Events' is kindly supported by the embassy of Israel.
