About

On 26 December 2004, one of the worst natural disasters in living memory devastated vast swathes of Asia. A huge earthquake off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a massive tsunami that swept away coastal communities around the Indian Ocean. More than 230,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were injured or left homeless.

Three years on, people whose lives were torn apart have taken part in a unique photography project to show how they are putting their lives back together. The project, led by Ruth Robinson in partnership with the British Red Cross, involves individuals taking photographs and explaining them in their own words. The process is empowering and the results offer a unique insight into their thoughts and feelings.

This moving exhibition shows projects in Indonesia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The British Red Cross mounted a huge emergency response following the disaster and is continuing to help people recover through constructing homes and giving cash grants to enable people to rebuild their livelihoods.
