About
The Crypt Gallery in St Ives is the venue for an intriguing exhibition showcasing the work of three local artists, Carol Tanner, Susi Gutierrez and Ann Oxley.
Carol Tanner combines her strong feelings for the earth with a passion for dance and house music. She uses sculpture, oils, plaster, fabrics, video and poetry to express her insights into other worlds. “I try to be open, to capture the animistic magical world that exists all around us but is masked by society and our own preconceptions of what’s normal” says Carol “The hidden rhythms of life pulse through our veins and if we can perceive the magic in nature we can connect to energy and inspiration.”
Susi Gutiérrez, originally from Lima in Peru, studied Fine Art and MA Printmaking at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. At the Crypt she is exhibiting a collection of recent prints and paintings made at her studio in Higher Bussow and the Porthmeor printing workshop. Susi likes to revisit her old prints and paintings, adding new elements. She finds this process fascinating, as if giving another chance of existence to her work. Some paintings are abstract, or semi-abstract, while the prints are a combination of drawing, photography, etching and mono-printing methods. She thinks that painting is like digging, trying to find treasures and clues through shape and colour.
Ann Oxley’s contribution to Triple Silhouette is both poignant and playful. A family group is made up of decorative trays and salvers with the addition of features, coy or austere. A cast of evil little characters pop up unexpectedly, and Rabbit Woman stands somewhat apart from the rest. In a small wooden cabinet, a woman sings about her marriage and there may be a surprise waiting to jump out of that box…...
Admission is free and all are welcome.
