Do you have armfuls of studies and works on paper that you feel have a value… but aren’t sure how best to share them with the world? Join us for this month’s #BeSmartCassArt talk, to explore the value of drawings for artists, gallerists and collectors alike – from production to display and sales.

About

This talk will look at drawing from the context of art history to discuss evolving cultural attitudes to drawing and related changes in the market place. From studio detritus (as preparations for final works) to complete artworks in their own right, to now, in the digital age, some audiences having very little understanding of what a drawing is or how it is made.

We will unpick questions such as

> What is meant by ‘drawing’ – both in the wider sense of the word, and in the context of this conversation?

> In mind of viewers (who may or may not have an arts education or background), what assumptions are made about drawings, from material to production?

> What’s the role of drawing as a practice?

> Why might collectors and curators be interested in drawings, for exhibitions and collections alike?

> As it’s not a necessity for an artist to have a drawing practice – and yet many sculptors for instance are known for their studies and works on paper, what are some stories of artists who do, and artists who don’t, draw?

> How are drawings distinct from paintings, sculptures and new media?

> What insights do drawings offer into how an artist is thinking or developing an idea?

> What are the most effective ways to present drawings to engage viewers?

> How is a drawing or work on paper valued? And how might it ever increase in value?

> What’s the role of drawings for an artist’s legacy?

> Expect to leave the event inspired, informed and raring to go.

A Q&A session with the audience will follow the facilitated conversation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

TIM WRIGHT

Tim Wright was born and grew up in London, where he continues to live and work. Primarily a painter, he also draws and makes works on paper. He has had many exhibitions and his work features in private collections in the UK and abroad.

He was a prizewinner in The Derwent Art Prize 2016, and showed at the 2014 BP Portrait Award at The National Portrait Gallery. He exhibits regularly at The Pontone Gallery, London.

He worked as painting consultant to the film 'Mr Turner’. He lectures about Turner, and has made numerous media appearances, including BBC News, Dutch and German arts programmes, the BBC arts programme ‘Imagine’, Sky Arts and the European arts channel ‘Arte’. He regularly teaches workshops in subjects ranging from life painting and drawing to the use of watercolour, working most recently at The Turner Contemporary Gallery, the New Art Gallery Walsall, Turner’s House Museum and the Mall galleries in London.

His current paintings, featured earlier this year in the exhibition ‘Into The Deep’ at the Pontone Gallery, are a turbulent treatment of baroque motifs, which emphasise and explore the materiality of paint.
