On the 12th of October, there is a private invitation-only event for the opening of PRIEST's solo exhibition 'Trapped in a Cel' based on his love for Looney Tunes. The solo exhibition will be available to view from the 12th of October till the 9th of December at Mucciaccia Gallery in Mayfair London.
About
Contemporary pop artist PRIEST’s satirical style contrasts playful and innocent imagery with dark, subversive subject matters. His compositions are bright and colourful, combining nostalgic cartoons, video games, and street art in a tongue-in-cheek critique of capitalism and corporate culture. Toys also feature heavily in PRIEST’s practice, the word doubling as a derogatory term for inexperienced painters in the graffiti scene while emphasizing the element of play that’s central to his approach. In his words, each project is a bad idea taken much further than it should have been in the first place.
PRIEST started painting graffiti illegally on the streets in New Zealand in 2010. Following a court case for graffiti in Australia, PRIEST decided to make paintings and prints to try to help pay the fines. PRIEST moved cities a lot, from Wellington New Zealand, Melbourne Australia, Copenhagen Denmark, Glasgow Scotland, and currently London United Kingdom.
Born in a small country town in New Zealand, PRIEST grew up in a creative household where his mother was a dancer and his father a street performer. His family owned a small shop in which they sold outdoor wind sculptures.
Now a full-time modern artist, PRIEST has had work exhibited in group shows alongside Banksy, Obey, Kenny Sharf, and many others. PRIEST is inspired by Rone, KAWS, Joan Cornella, Javier Calleja and Nathan Fielder,
PRIEST has a wide span of important collectors spanning from KAWS collection in New York to Private Oxford collections of former London Museum curators. His paintings are in collections along with blue-chip artists such as Basquiat, Warhol, Keith Haring, and KAWS.
Collectors from Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, Montreal, and Melbourne are buying PRIEST originals for their collections. There is currently a waitlist of 8 - 12 months for originals from the studio.
