Draw from the depths of your own experiences and emotions, transforming them into compelling images and narratives at our exclusive graphic novel workshop. This April 20 and 21, 2024, join the esteemed Korean graphic novelist Heny Kim on an intimate journey of creative exploration and self-expression. Heny, celebrated for her evocative storytelling and unique visual style, will guide you through the process of illustrating and writing your own stories, rooted deeply in your personal experiences. This workshop, taking place in English, is designed to offer a new perspective on processing emotions, with a strong emphasis on freedom of expression and mutual respect. 

Who Should Attend?

  • Emerging comic artists seeking to refine their craft.
  • Established writers and painters desiring constructive feedback within a small, supportive community.
  • Creatives longing to diverge from their usual styles and explore new artistic horizons.
  • Anyone with a profound interest in storytelling and the arts, aspiring to bring their inner voice to life.

Workshop Objective: By the end of this transformative session, participants will have crafted their own short graphic novel, ready to be presented and shared with peers.

Essentials for the Workshop:

  • A brief note on a personal experience you wish to explore.
  • Your preferred artistic tools and materials for creation.
  • Snacks for personal enjoyment. Complimentary coffee and tea will be provided.

Schedule: April 20 & 21, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM each day. The workshop includes 4 hours of immersive activity each day, with a 30-minute break to refresh and recharge.

Detailed Agenda:

Day 1: Saturday

  • 10:00 AM: Opening & Self-introductions
  • 10:20 AM: Workshop Overview by Heny Kim
  • 11:00 AM: Interactive Relay Cartoon Activity
  • 11:20 AM: Free Association & Sketching Session
  • 12:00 PM: Half-hour Break
  • 12:30 PM: Character Design and Development
  • 12:45 PM: Crafting Your First Story
  • 13:30 PM: Group Discussion & Feedback Session

Homework: Conceptualize page layouts and jot down emerging ideas.

Day 2: Sunday 

  • 10:00 AM: Review of Storyboards and Corrections
  • 10:30 AM: Illustration Session
  • 11:30 AM: Half-hour Break
  • 12:00 PM: Coloring Techniques and Final Touches
  • 13:00 PM: Final Presentation and Shared Reflections

Investment: €50 Limited to 6-8 participants for an intimate and engaging experience.

About Heny Kim: Born in Busan, Heny Kim's journey from a design graduate to a culinary expert, and finally, to a renowned graphic novelist, is a testament to her diverse talents and dedication to storytelling. Heny's autobiographical work, known for its feminist undertones, navigates the intricacies of personal experiences within societal dynamics, effortlessly blending fiction with reality. Her participation in the Comics Creation Program at EESI - École Européenne Supérieure de l'Image has further honed her skills, making her a prominent voice in the world of graphic novels.

Venue: The workshop takes place in the spacious surroundings of SomoS Artspace, the cosmopolitan hub in the creative heart of Berlin between Kreuzberg and Neukölln, with bountiful daylight and an always friendly atmosphere.
