An exhibition of new work by David Martin inspired by previous trips to Ethiopia, West Africa and Bangladesh that explore the notion of transformation.
About
The central theme of Martin's work has grown out of a practice based on travel and exploration. Immersing himself in the places he visits, his colourful, multi-layered paintings are filled with a dynamism and vibrancy that comes from observing how people relate to the often chaotic environment that surrounds them.
As an artist Martin seeks out places that are going through change. Even though in the midst of the pandemic it seems as though our society is going through a lot of change, there are many places in the world that are going through a transformation still more fundamental, and wishes to bear witness to that in his paintings.
Unable to travel this year, he has sought out new material from previous trips to Ethiopia, West Africa and Bangladesh and looked to create images that speak of this transformation. With a long-running interest in the ancient history of alchemy, for this body of work he has sought to use metals associated with alchemy, such as silver, copper and tin, and through chemical processes and the construction and manipulation of complex surfaces, he has created a set of physical transformations that serve as the starting point for these meditations on a changing world.
