An exhibition of sculpture and drawing by friends and fellow artists, Sarah Purvey and Anna Gillespie.

About

Purvey and Gillespie have increasingly seen parallels in their work as they each delve deeper into the nature of human embodiment, often doing so through the lens of personal experience. Purvey works predominantly in clay and on paper and explores an intensely physical relationship with drawing throughout her practice. Her monumental ceramic vessels act as a metaphor for the human form tasked to carry and map the journey through her emotional landscape. The resulting works exude an instinctive and visceral energy. Gillespie’s practice has explored the sculptural solidity of the human form for over twenty five years. Recently, however, her depictions of the human form seem to dwell on fragility, as if the previous solidity has cracked open to reveal the insecurity of human existence. The hollowness of her sculptures is now revealed rather than concealed, with cracks and fissures allowing the viewer a dark and intimate view into the empty core. The traditional materials predominantly used by both artists - clay, plaster and bronze - are all associated with solidity and strength. In this exhibition however these very materials are manipulated to reveal hollowness and absence, fissure and scaring, and thus act as a trace of the human condition in all its complexity.
