About

The positive marking of a place, the identification with a location and its negative counterpart, places of anxiety, as well as the space of digital isolation, where bonds between people vanish, are guiding themes of a series of events presented by the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program on the occasion of the opening of its new venue on Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg.
Minouk Lim’s exhibition New Town Ghost GAGA HOHO presented in the gallery space on the ground floor and the performances, film screenings, poetry readings and concerts held in the events room on the first floor, examine issues and themes that could hardly be more contemporary: do we seek to retreat into the private sphere – the purportedly safe cocoon – in view of the explosive dimensions of current crises, or do the transgressions of right-wing populism and the massive spread of instability around the world unleash a stronger engagement with social and political concerns that have long since been overlooked? The spectrum of potential artist responses in various contexts around the globe is wide-ranging: from critical interventions from the African continent and questions of gentrification in Seoul, South Korea, to the ironic skewering of the neoliberal mania for competition, and the search for a new, fresh language for a political-minded poetry, to the creation of settings that get visitors thinking and encourage self-reflection, and urgent, iconic images that show the precarious and exposed nature of the artist’s existence.
