Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery's fall exhibition, Here, a timely and unique group exhibition examines shifting physical/geographical and conceptual/imagined boundaries (and boundlessness) in, and around, the metropolis of LA and how those barriers act to prevent people from interacting and exchanging. Boundaries provide us the physical and conceptual framework to delineate the idea of “self” from “other,” and “here” from “there.” However, boundaries contain an inherent paradox; as political theorist William E. Connolly succinctly suggests: “Boundaries provide pre-conditions of identity, individual agency, and collective action; but they also close off possibilities of being that might otherwise flourish. Boundaries both foster and inhibit freedom; they both protect and violate life.” In addition to the natural and traditional human geography (such as neighborhoods), the 16 artists assembled in Here investigate LA's internal physical and conceptual boundaries as a way to unpack the complexities of the City, exploring localized frictions to uncover these bounded and unbounded landscapes. The compelling presentation features works by talented LA-based artists - some of whom have immigrated to the City - exploring themes such as displacement, migration, race, class, state-sanctioned violence, LA neighborhood signifiers and architectural facades. There will also be vibrant programming throughout the run of the show with an opening reception on October 21, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. For most information, visit www.lamag.org
