signs and symbols presents Sound is a body held, a durational performance by collaborative duo Tony Orrico and David Hurlin as part of artists & allies v — live at the gallery. The audience is invited to experience the performance as an ongoing sound and movement installation for any length of time during the evening.

Hurlin and Orrico experiment with the capacity to extract sound from material through full-bodied interventions and the fallout of their fatigue. As the synapses between their dialogic play fade, it is the memory, resonance, and motion of sound that mediates the performers' actions and determines collective course. Sound holds all bodies to the space, anticipating variation and listening for new direction.

tony orrico is a visual and performing artist whose work is recognized globally for its ingenuity within the intersections of performance and drawing. He has exhibited across the US and internationally in Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Spain. His visual work is in collection at of The National Academy of Sciences (Washington DC) and Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC, Mexico City) as well as prominent private collections such as Grazyna Kulczyk, Kablanc/Fundación Otazu and Bergmeier/Kunstsaele, among others. He has presented at the CCCB, Centre Pompidou-Metz, The New Museum, Cranbrook Art Museum and Poptech 2011: The World Rebalancing. Orrico is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture, Intermedia, and Dance at the University of Iowa.

david hurlin received his BFA in photography and tabla (hand drums of the Hindustani classical music tradition) and his MA in studio art from Maharishi International University (MIU), including time abroad in India studying with tabla master Anup Ghosh. Hurlin has extensive experience as a professional drummer and percussionist playing for Apocalypso Tantric Noise Choir, Elizabeth Moen and most recently with Mike Dillon Band and Nolatet. Currently, he is working in the fields of sound art, sculpture, installation and performance art. He is pursuing his MFA at University of Iowa in sculpture/intermedia.
