‘All my paintings take time and as I get older they seem to take longer and I seem not to care.' Tom Wood, celebrated Yorkshire portrait painter, reflects on his way of making art.

About

'I like to live with my work and revise it over time. Some might call it tinkering, others ‘fettling’.  I think of it as a long meandering conversation in which subjects appear and then fade away.  I build my images up in layers so each layer has a dialogue with the one beneath it; fragments sometimes remain, sometimes not.'

Best known for his portraits, including those of HRH, The Prince of Wales and Yorkshire author and playwright Alan Bennett, Wood’s subject matter also includes figurative subjects, animal and nature subjects, abstract and still life studies.  The Mercer exhibition brings together over 30 new paintings, including very recent studies of dancers from Northern Ballet. The paintings will be for sale.

Tom Wood is also an inspiring teacher and he will be presenting two special events at the Mercer Art Gallery:

Tom Wood: New Work an Illustrated Talk on Tues 23 Feb, 2pm, tickets £6
Stencils Workshop Tues 26 April, 10am – 4pm, £25
