About
In the first show devoted solely to his pastel drawings, Tom Phillips presents striking new work alongside seminal drawings dating from the 1960's. This comparison shows the importance that the medium has had throughout Tom's career and will provide a unique opportunity to see, in one place, some of his most eagerly collected works.Inspired by natural forms, musical notation and calligraphy, these abstract drawings have an organic and lyrical quality. Tom's musical training is seen in, Heldentenor, 2006, where bold, soaring forms capture the robust and heroic qualities of this style of operatic voice. Conversely, it is the delicacy of line in other drawings that is striking; Princeton: Early Fall, 2006, brings to mind the dappled light and falling leaves of an autumnal day.
