About

A new collection of atmospheric landscapes by Bristol-based fine artist Tom Lietzau will be presented during a week-long solo exhibition at the Christmas Steps Gallery. ‘Restless City’ comprises vibrant and colourful images of central Bristol as well as escapes into the city’s green spaces, and even further away - to the seaside.

The paintings belong to a larger series "Genius Loci", emerging from Tom's fascination with Bristol’s beautiful setting and its rich history. About his project the artists said, I am exploring the relationship between Bristol’s past and present: how these two co-exist and how they interrelate with each other. Ultimately, I want to capture the essence of the place which is beyond time, that can be described as “Genius Loci” - the “Spirit of Place”.

Among the works on show will be the “Burning Sky over Park Street” which became known as ‘prophetic’, as the artist had finished it just days before a fire broke out in a Bristol University building on 6th January 2018.

Other works include Avon Gorge, Broad Quay, and Avon New Cut set in early 1900s, as well as views of contemporary Bristol.

The paintings have been created using a lengthy process of applying multiple layers of oil and acrylic paint - Click here to find out more about the artist’s technique.

Alongside original paintings, there will be limited edition prints and cards available to purchase. The artist will be present at the exhibition.

About the artist:

Tom is a professional artist painter with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts.  His works cover a wide range of artistic forms, including paintings, drawings and conceptual art, as well as art theory, and have been shown on numerous solo and group exhibitions.
