Wren Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by British multidisciplinary artist Tom Allen in St Ives.
About
The presentation will feature works on paper and prints from two bodies of work inspired by the rugged Cornish landscape where he grew up.
Allen investigates aspects of nature and our visceral connection to it—not what we first see but where our mind takes us, the shift from the literal to the ethereal. This is the mystery he looks to explore.
“When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe...” -John Muir
Interstellar Landscapes is an abstract look at the coastline and its raw beauty—where land, sea, and sky come together. Allen uses a cyanotype process and allows the environment to come in contact with the print. This, as well as the weather and seasons, all have an influence, resulting in a unique representation of the landscape at the time the work was produced.
Also on view is a second body of work, Photons, a study on light and the enigmatic particle, something fleeting and ethereal that has shaped our universe and existence from the time of the Big Bang. These prints are traditional photographs made without a camera, distilling the photographic process down to its essential purpose, to capture light freezing for a moment in time. We are left with an imprint of light on paper, a memory of its brief existence.
