About
In the phrase ‘West of the Sun’, Deveson has found a perfect description for the state of mind in which he enters whilst striving to find the perfect image; attempting to reach a mystical land beyond the horizon and to the west of the sun.
The exhibition will contribute to the photographer’s ambition to create a classic coffee-table photography book containing moments from his journeys in pursuit of a world to the west of the sun. The stunning photographs will feature alongside the photographer’s thoughts, musings and blogs from his various trips, alongside quotes that have inspired.
The images are completely analogue, created using Kodak’s 35mm T-Max 400 film, an old Nikkormat & a 24mm lens. The landscape photographs show the artist’s dedication to finding and creating the perfect image - all images are composed in the camera at the time of taking with no cropping taking place. They are then printed by the photographer at home in his darkroom. A perfect combination of science and magic allows the creation of these mystical and magical worlds, which at the same time retain the spontaneity of documentary and reportage photography. The uniqueness of the work comes from the strength of the composition, the landscapes themselves and the personal input of the photographer.
