After completing his studies with Rosemarie Trockel, Hoffknecht previously devoted himself exclusively to sculpture. He created works that deal with the aesthetics of the Bauhaus under today's conditions. His objectivity and impact in space were his main points of reference. With strict, minimalist steel structures, he developed a consistent, unmistakable signature, which is characterized by the effort to reduce form and beauty to their pure, real core.
In the exhibition "Dummy" Hoffknecht is now for the first time translating his sculptural art into two-dimensional wall works. For this purpose, he developed a modular system consisting of three square “tiles” in which he takes up the basic elements of his steel sculptures: the straight line, the curve and the pure, empty surface. The “tiles” are produced as screen prints in unlimited numbers. Assembled in various combinations, however, they result in a multitude of unique pieces, all of which follow a strict, coherent, architectural principle and thus become a kind of "pictorial wall sculpture" or "sculptural wall picture".
Hoffknecht remains true to the guiding principle of his sculptural work. The withdrawn aesthetics do not specify anything and leave everything open. The works have no motive and do not convey any predetermined information. They do not open up immediately and leave room for subjective consideration. The white of
the lines directs our gaze, which sweeps across the surface in gentle curves and long straight lines. The objects become places of meditation where you can lose yourself.
Tobias Hoffknecht was born in Bochum in 1987. He studied experimental sculpture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Rosemarie Trockel. His work has already been seen in numerous solo and group exhibitions in The Hague, Athens, Milan, New York, Sao Paolo, Vienna, Berlin, Cologne and Düsseldorf. In addition, both the Kunstverein Bochum and the Kunstverein Leverkusen dedicated extensive solo exhibitions to him. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.
