About
‘Elements of Materiality’ is the concept behind the TOAST SS’18 collection. It celebrates a sensory, scientific and practical exploration into the materiality of things - both human made and natural. The notion underpinning the collection is that everything material is made of the same building blocks which connects us all, despite our differences.
To bring ‘Elements of Materiality’ to life, TOAST is collaborating with celebrated British artist, Phoebe Cummings, to create a unique installation, titled ‘Season’, entirely made from clay. Phoebe is known for her highly detailed, temporary sculptures that change over time – shrinking, cracking, drying and even dissolving. Through their changing state, these sculptures focus on momentary experiences, fragility and impermanence.
‘Season’ will explore the possibilities of clay as a raw material – its changing states – and the creative process as a whole. It will be possible to observe Phoebe build the sculpture and then experience how it is activated by other elements in its environment; fire, water and air. The making and transition of the work maps a cycle as the clay, dug from the earth, returns to the earth.
‘Season’ will be shown at Protein Studio, from 8th March to 13th March, 10am – 6pm. Protein Studio, 31 New Inn Yard, Shoreditch, London, EC2A 3EY. For more information see www.toa.st/materiality
