An exhibition of paintings by Tim Cousins, Cuillin Bantock, Belinda Ellis, Fritz Duffy and Shirley O’Neil
About
This exhibition brings together the recent work of five painters whose approach is primarily non-representational. They do, however, make a natural grouping in that they all believe that painting should be energised by something outside itself. Additionally, they have at times worked together ‘on site’, outside the studio.
The work of each of these five painters can be instantly distinguished. This bears testimony to the different ways they approach their subject matter, whatever this may be. In the end, with any work of art, in whatever mode or medium, it is the treatment of the starting point which counts, not the starting point itself. There is neither less nor more virtue in any particular subject matter.
Tim Cousins, the painter in the group who initiated this exhibition, has written an extended essay taking further the argument outlined here. The essay will be available free of charge in the Gallery during the run of show. The exhibition will consist of paintings, collages and prints, ranging from work where the subject matter may be instantly recognised to cases where the subject has apparently ‘disappeared’, having been totally subsumed by the formal/expressive concerns of the artist.
