China Lost in Time

19.12.2017 – 06.01.2018
Opening Night: 19.12.2017, 18:00 – 21:00

‘Timeless Patterns - China lost in time’ is the first solo show on British soil by Mateusz Lapsa-Malawski, Kensal Rise’s resident and one of HM Government’s own Lead Technical Architects.
Mat is a digital native, living and breathings binary at work. In his spare time he compliments his digital expertise and life with photography, sculpting and ceramics.

This exhibition is not a travel photography show from a random trip to China. What Mat captures is modern day China in a pure analogue way, the timelessness of a country that is transforming itself.

Mat chose to only work with medium format black and white film. All the images on display have been captured on a classic and non-digital Hasselblad 503cw and Carl Zeiss Planar lenses 2.8x80mm/150x4mm on Kodak Pro 400 T-Max film.
Mat affirms that this particular technological choice helps him to visualise the connection between now and the past. It encapsulates a timelessness in the frame. By forcing the author to the meticulous manual light measurement, focusing, and development it returns magic to the photography. It allows him to steal the magic to open the timelessness window. Where: now, past and future are one.

Enjoy the artist’s sentimental travel to the lost China that was, is, and will become.
