A collaborative work by William Doyle and Ryan MacPhail that displays the fruits of two parallel practices of construction.

About

Timbral is a collaborative work that displays the fruits of two parallel practices of construction, one via the use of physical objects and fundamental materials, and the other through the use of sound. Both practices work in relation to each other to subvert the standard use of their objects: to transform the functionality of the physical and to offer a functionality of the auditory. The objects were constructed simultaneously in a studio, the choice of materials influencing the timbral qualities of the sound, and the audio processing choices influencing how the physical materials were put together. The sound was created by recording the construction and the effects were processed live in the studio. This not only influenced the physical pieces but also created an abstracted audio documentation of their making. By playing this back in the space, the idea is to give the audience a sense of the objects and their history, and the relationship between them and the sound.
