An extraordinary series of photographic art-works by the distinguished artist Tim Head was produced more than four decades ago, in 1982. This is the first time these works have been exhibited in a solo show in the UK.

About the exhibition

This extraordinary series of photographic art-works by the distinguished artist Tim Head was produced more than four decades ago, in 1982. This is the first time these works have been exhibited in a solo show in the UK.

Aesthetically, the art-works reveal a profound tension between the abstract and the representational.  

Although they were made more than four decades ago, these sinister and unsettling works seem to speak directly to the present. The artist’s concerns about surveillance and security, power and control, conveyed through composite two-part or four-part photographic images, are as relevant today as when they were produced.  

Tim Head’s austere, alienated images of empty urban spaces challenge our notion that photography is an objective means of reproducing reality and make the world unfamiliar to us. 

A fully-illustrated catalogue by the curator, Professor Phillip Lindley, will be available. 

Additional opening hours

The standard opening hours for Silent Spaces are 12-2pm weekdays only. We are delighted to offer some additional opening hours as follows:

  • Friday 29th November from 6pm - 8pm as part of Lboro Lates. This is an event hosted by arts and culture venues across Loughborough town centre and campus. Loughborough comes to life with art exhibitions and events - all free to visit. Find out more about Loughborough Lates
  • Thursday 12 and Friday 14 December, 4-6pm as part of Loughborough University's Winter Graduation Ceremonies.

Accessibility

There is step-free access into the gallery via a ramp and side door. During opening hours, there will be an invigilator on duty in the gallery. If you require their assistance, then please alert them on arrival by calling to them or waving at them – the entrance to the gallery is fully glazed and the main entrance door should be open.

Facilities

There are toilets located on the ground floor of Martin Hall including an accessible toilet. There is step-free access into this building.

Martin Hall Cafe serves light refreshments and is open from 8.30am to 5pm Mon-Fri. It is located behind the gallery, accessed through the main entrance to Martin Hall.

Parking

Please note that visitors are now required to register their vehicle and pay to park on campus. There are various ways in which you can register and pay (both in advance and on arrival).

Public transport

If you are travelling by public transport, you can take the Sprint Bus from Loughborough railway station or the town centre (Ashby Square) and alight at Loughborough College. Cross Epinal Way at the pedestrian crossing and keep going straight ahead to enter campus. This brings you onto Shirley Pearce Square with Martin Hall on the left.
