Artist Tim Fudge returns to the the gallery with a stunning selection of landscape paintings from his beloved Pembrokeshire.

About

Fans of Tim Fudge's work will be familiar with his colourful scenes of North Pembrokeshire but his latest exhibition at the gallery will feature the results of his first foray into South Pembrokeshire.

He visited beauty spots like Bosherston, Trefalen, and St Govans for the very first time and the result is some wonderful pictures of a very different coastal landscape that he is normally used to painting.

Tim, famed for his exuberant use of colour, says: “I have been painting the landscape of the North Pembrokeshire coast for years – that is, and always has been, my main obsession but I decided to venture south of the county after lockdown where the coast and geology is completely different.

“I’ve had a lifelong fascination with the landscapes and seascapes of North Pembrokeshire but I’ve made more trips to the West coasts of Scotland and Ireland than South Pembrokeshire, despite living here for more than 20 years.

“It’s a very different coastal landscape in the south – it’s totally different with limestone rather than granite and it offered me a fresh approach to my paintings. Limestone is quite angular and blocky.”

Tim paints his artwork in the studio – relying on memory, photographs and sketches that he makes on his coastal visits.

He says: “I’ve always been fascinated by the shifting patterns of light, flora and colour in North Pembrokeshire but it’s been interesting to see how visiting a new area a few miles away can produce very different work. Pembrokeshire is a very beautiful part of the country and it’s somewhere I will never tire of. The geology of the west coast is fascinating and rocks have become very important in my work.

“The physicality of the paint, expressive qualities of colour and gestural mark-making with the palette knife, combined with the powerful and historical spirit of place, are the things that, brought together, really do define my work.”
