This February the Royal Academy of Arts presents ‘THROES’, the much‐anticipated debut solo show of artist Ewa Wilczynski. The Senate Rooms will play host to Wilczynski's large‐scale paintings, which invite the audience into strange new dreamlike landscapes where fragments of life ‐ faces and hands ‐dominate the canvas.
About
London born artist Ewa Wilczynski, a graduate of Central Saint Martins and the Académie des Beaux‐Arts in Paris, has been heralded as a "future one to watch" by the Federation of British Artists.
Described by polymath Raymond Tallis as ‘achingly beautiful’ her work explores suggestive dichotomies, particularly in human nature and metaphysics. Wilczynski says: “I’m not really too interested in absolutes, complete definitions or painting ‘about’ something. The space in‐between is what intrigues me.”
Within her composition, spatial and sensory dimensions are fused in a whirling mass to reveal a series of visceral self-portraits painted with intense flashes of colour. It is here that colour and character become synonymous: the sensory qualities of colour are changeable and in a state of constant flux. Certain colours can appear more vivid or subdued depending on their surroundings; much the same with character and emotions in human nature.
For Wilczynski, art exists beyond the canvas and outside of the studio. It is an all-encompassing concept and, as such, manifests itself in fashion, style, and lifestyle. Considered a muse to many in the worlds of fashion, film and photography, she has been shot by the likes of Rankin, Gozra Lozano, and Paulina Surys.
