'One can literally 'step' through and across the surface of one of Paul Manners new paintings. Stepping with the eye is an alarming, contradictory and pleasurable experience. It involves working with and against the painting's surface and includes generosity and seduction, and equally a type of dissent and failure. Turbulence occurs where the eye is asked to navigate the surface of these abstract paintings through peaks and troughs, through materiality and illusionism. The new work is assembled and constructed as well as conventionally painted.'

Alexis Harding, March 2011
