About

1933 Contemporary is pleased to present Vladimir Nikolic’ solo exhibition There is No Landscape, the artist’s first gallery exhibition in Asia following his first China debut project at the Times Museum in Guangzhou this year. Vladimir Nikolic lives and works in Belgrade, Europe, in his body of works, there exists a complex of escaping the defining context of the art system as well as responding to its intrinsic question of what art is. By shifting perspectives in between representation, subjective narratives and spectatorship, he makes us aware of “those voices surrounding an artwork”.

Constantly wondering whether, and to what extent, art has or does not have the power, Nikolic often uses a variety of voices accompanying his ‘objects’. The work There is No Landscape an audio/photo installation has a multi-angle narrative possibility: reappear scene, subjective narrative and standing on a bystander’s point of view. “A tree has lot of metaphorical potential. It helped Darwin to explain his theory of evolution; Paul Klee used it to formulate his idea of creativity. Yet looking from the top of the tree as a boy made me think that there is no landscape out there. The composition I am looking at doesn’t exist outside of my brain, because this composition depends on my position in the space, it changes accordingly. The landscape photography, accompanied with the sound of two persons having a dialogue. In the dialogue a fictional artist’s act is described, as if its happening in front of them, in the landscape photography. Two characters are trying to figure out what is it they are‘seeing’, what is the meaning of artist’s action.
