About
“I set myself the challenge of painting full time again for a complete year in and around Dover and Deal. The light in East Kent is very special and very changeable, especially with the sea so close, it is a real THEATRE OF LIGHT, a vast stage in front of me. I have painted through the different seasons in boiling sun and freezing snow. I always paint outside never in a studio. I have developed a technique to rapidly paint what I see and feel in front of me.I always remember a demonstration by a Japanese Calligrapher who thought for many minutes about the meaning of the word they were about to write on their scroll before rapidly writing it in a few seconds. I try to follow the same Zen philosophy.
This collection is a reflection of my year so far. Perched on the White Cliffs, painting sheep at Broadlees Farm (thanks to the kindness of the owner Simon who invited me in), painting Cows, Horses and Hay Bales in the countryside where I live but it is the light that binds them. Landscapes they way I see them as theatre and drama.”
