In a world of modern technology, the humble typewriter seems long-forgotten. But one woman has found a continuing use for the machines and it has nothing to do with writing words. Keira Rathbone uses the letters, numbers and symbols to create art - from tiny stick figures to huge multi-page montages.

About

Having graduated in 2005 from UWE, Bristol with a degree in Fine Art, Rathbone was already creating stunning works of art using her ever-growing collection of typewriters - much to her lecturers’ delight. She has since gone on to be recognised by media around the world for her unique style and working method, leading to lucrative international contracts to produce artwork for a variety of purposes.

International fashion mogul Paul Smith enlisted Rathbone's expertise to co-ordinate and star in a number of live 'typings' during extended exhibitions of her work in his prestigious Paris and London stores. This took place around the time Tuscandido Winery (California) commissioned her to create a series of works which will feature on the labels of their entire range of wines for the foreseeable future. Possibly inspiring the winery was UK-based Hobson’s Brewery who previously enlisted Rathbone to ensure their best marketing materials (the hundreds of thousands of beer mats they produce each year) had an artistic flair and sported her signature artwork.

Even the author, journalist and playwright Bonnie Greer demanded Rathbone’s artwork form the front cover of her 2009 bestseller ‘Obama Music’, now sold around the globe in multiple languages.

This art exhibition will celebrate Ms Rathbone’s newly created genre of ‘typings’ with an extensive collection of original works and an installation exploring the depths to which her creativity reaches.
