Australian artist Josephine Mead has drawn inspiration from an ancient grave stone from the Hellenistic Period (end of the 2nd c. B.C) found in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum Collection.
About
The poetic inscription on the stone, which is dedicated to Menophila, has provided the artist with metaphorical matter to examine how poetic language can transgress different time periods; to consider how she can connect with figures of the past; and to contemplate her relationship to mortality, progress, loss and hope in her present. Through the offering of still-life photography, the artist seeks to create mourning spaces / altar pieces to Menophila.
