About

This 2 day (with an optional energetic 3rd day trip out) is a unique drawing workshop, seeking to discover your inner storyteller!

The Peak District is steeped in folklore and inspires storytelling. Working with visual prompts from the surrounding landscape, you will create artwork based on an existing narrative or be inspired by your own. There are many different ways of doing this as you could as easily be inspired by colour and sound as well as visuals. Storytelling can be anything from creating characters, scenes, or simply telling your own story based on the way you respond to the surroundings. How you capture it is up to you, and I will work with you both in groups and on a one to one basis.

We will work in a variety of mediums and explore ideas through a series of exercises, both inside and outside the studio (weather dependent).  The outcome could be anything from one finished piece of art to a storyboard of ideas.

This workshop is suitable to all abilities. You just need to let your imagination fly.

Rough outline of the course:

Day 1:

Morning:

Introduction to some of the folklore  / stories based in the surrounding landscape. Discussion of your own ideas.

Basic drawing refresher /  introductory course. We will have fun trying a variety of mediums and creating marks in response to sight and sound.

Afternoon:

Taking the learnings from the morning, explore the surrounding landscape and sketch a series of responsive drawings. These can be as detailed or as abstract as you like. Think about place, character and atmosphere.

Day 2:

Morning:

Pulling the sketches you made on the first day together and advancing them to the next stage. This could be by fleshing them out, adding colour or texture, or by developing your storyboard. Again a variety of mediums could be used, depending which best suits your style.

Afternoon:

Finishing off final pieces. Sharing the results.

Day 3 (optional extra day):

Morning:

A walk to from the Roaches to Luds Church, exploring the narrative of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. This will give you a chance to capture the landscape en plein air and experience the setting of the story first hand.

Duration: Approx 3-4 hours.

Afternoon:

Creating your own artwork based on your findings from the morning.
