About

Victoria Miro is delighted to present The Story of Art as it’s Still Being Written. This exhibition, curated by Katy Hessel, coincides with the publication of her major new book The Story of Art without Men, published by Hutchinson Heinemann on 8 September 2022. A pioneering exploration of women artists from the past 500 years, this book is the story of art for our times – one with women at its heart – brought together for the first time.

Based on the book’s final chapter, Still Writing the Story of Art, this exhibition brings together a selection of artists working in the past two decades who define the contemporary moment – from those inventing a new language for figuration and abstraction to those working with new technologies, sculpture and installation. Still Writing the Story of Art looks at artists of the new millennium who are tackling complex themes, rewriting lost pasts and exposing historical truths, decolonising art history, challenging and reinventing what we think of as ‘monuments’, and employing utopian and dystopian themes. Artists include Njideka Akunyili Crosby, María Berrío, Somaya Critchlow, Tracey Emin, Jadé Fadojutimi, Chantal Joffe, Julie Mehretu, Zanele Muholi, Wangechi Mutu, Celia Paul, Deborah Roberts, Khadija Saye, Sarah Sze and Flora Yukhnovich.
