About

HINTERLAND GALLERY presents The Story of a Moonfish a selection of London-based artist Annalisa Colombara’s etchings from 1977.

The Story of a Moonfish is Colombara’s response to the beauty of the ocean – to the world that exists beneath the waves and the lives of its inhabitants.

Furthermore, her colourful drawings from 1990s transport the viewer from a coral reef to the Red Sea, through the depths of the ocean, bringing to life these rich, mostly unseen domains.

Deeply connected to the sea since childhood, Colombara’s work reflects her ongoing fascination with and appreciation for intricate aquatic landscapes, and her desire to preserve them for future generations – through her work Colombara seeks to emphasise the devastating effects pollution can have on marine ecosystems and our will to restore life to the sea.

“The sea is the beginning of life,” said Colombara. “The sea is in us, is part of us. We have a responsibility to it and we need to pass on this respect, for the sea, and nature, to our children.”

The artist’s book The Story of a Moonfish  is part of the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Meermanno Museum, The Hague.

Annalisa Colombara was born in 1953 in Novara, Northern Italy. Today, she lives and works in London.
