Christ Church Spitalfields is pleased to present an exhibition of photography, video and installation by artist Clare Lewis, installed in the middle crypt at Christ Church during the East London Photomonth festival. In a series of haunting images of urban and rural scenes, Lewis evokes a sense of fleeting personal memories, combining in a wider reflection of a Sublime universal landscape. Concerned with transition, particularly the passage from life to death, Lewis' current work explores the areas of the threshold and the ‘Liminal' - a psychological or metaphysical intermediate state characterised by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. ‘I am interested in external places where transitions take place and also the effect of transition upon our own psychological space, during the journey we make as individuals through our life passage.' The transitory nature of Lewis' work offers a range of experience: a sense of suspension, anxiety and loss, or converse feelings of discovery and enlightenment in the human traces observed in the spaces we travel through. Focusing on snapshot moments of time, Lewis contrasts the fragile and transitory nature of life experience against an unseen eternal continuum, offering a reflection on the flux and flow of life, its beauty and fragility and the possibility of transcendence. Located in the Christ Church crypt, the site itself has been a ‘Liminal' space over the course of three centuries - used historically for burial and the passage from life to afterlife and more recently as the dwelling place for homeless visitors living on the margins of society. The crypt is soon to be redeveloped as a community meeting, education and gallery space, acting as a threshold space in Spitalfields for the future. Clare Lewis is a photographer and sculptor who produces unique multi-media installations, specific to each site of exhibition. This is Lewis' first solo show since graduating form Chelsea College of Art in 2010.
