About

Founded in 2006 in London, UK, The Smalls Film Festival has been championing independent filmmaking and creative people for over a decade, making it an essential destination for filmmakers from across the globe. With a one-of-a-kind mix of fresh talent and Academy Award winners, our 17,000+ strong community of filmmakers come together once a year for the most dynamic, hustle-and-bustle week in the short film industry - and we'd like you to join us.

Saturday 8th September

Calvert 22 venue

1.30pm - 2.45pm - Official Selection Comedy Shorts

3.30pm - 4.30pm - Official Selection Student Film Shorts

4.00pm - 5.00pm - Panel - Pushing Creative Boundaries in Documentary
Documentary is fast becoming one of the most creatively exciting formats as filmmakers experiment with form and blur the boundaries between fact and fiction. As a filmmaker, what techniques and approaches can you use to break away from the tired ‘interview and archive’ format? Whether it’s due to production constraints, creative vision or part of a savvy strategy to make your film stand out in a crowded space, we hear from filmmakers and commissioners about how and when to push the boundaries.

5.30pm - 7.00pm - Official Selection Documentary Shorts

7.15pm - 8.15pm - Official Selection Music Video

Sunday 9th September

Calvert 22 venue

1.30pm - 2.30pm - Official Selection Fighting for 50/50 in Film Shorts

3.00pm - 4.00pm - Panel - Outside The Box - Challenging Representation On Screen
Gender representation is at the forefront of the conversation in the film and TV industry. But it’s not just about making sure the stats are right, the quality of representation is equally important. The films in this year’s 50/50 category not only manage to hit statistical targets but also show women on screen in all their variety and complexity. This panel celebrates the new generation of directors who are out there doing the work and nailing gender representation both behind the camera and on screen.

4.30pm - 6.30pm - Official Selection Drama Shorts

7.00pm - 8.00pm - Life of a Short Film - Wren Boys
Harry Lighton’s multi-award winning short film, Wren Boys, was a huge hit on the festival circuit, playing in competition at the London Film Festival, Sundance and SXSW among many others and receiving BAFTA and BIFA nominations. Producer Sorcha Bacon talks us through the life cycle of the film from initial concept through script development, funding and production to getting the film in front of festival programmers and audiences. Join us for practical insights into navigating the often perilous journey from script to screen.

8.15pm - 9.15pm - Official Selection Animation Shorts
