The story of The Serpent Eats Its Tail begins with a fascination for alchemy, a spiritual practice aimed at transforming the mundane into the sublime.
About
The Serpent Eats Its Tail is the first solo exhibition by artist Russell James Redwood Harris.
Born on the Romney Marsh, on Englands South-East Coastline, Russell trained at Londons Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Music and Dance, completing their Batchelor of Arts Programme in Dance Theatre in 2005. In 2016 Russell started presenting his own projects as an exhibiting artist.
The exhibition consists of a series of masks, ritual objects and wall canvases that evoke a world steeped in the slow movement of time and the blind transformations of geology. They are 'odes' to alternative god figures that suggest a primordial world, they are echoes of past rituals, half created by human hands, and half created by the course of nature.
Russell has worked with AER Scents, an independent Berlin-based perfume house, to create olfactory halos to surround the objects.
