About

Produced in the wake of current global events, where societies are uneasy, political systems appear to be in upheaval and a great divide is emerging, PANG depicts a glaringly dystopian vision of the world. Here, dictatorships are either long established or in chaotic mid-formation. Cities and societies founded on corruption, greed and fear are held in the clutches of dangerous demagogues, while democracy no longer has its place. Only the most ruthlessly powerful are in the lead, portrayed often as animals or with no faces at all. They observe the civilisations they have compressed into shape with cold indifference. “Their” people have become unknowing slaves to a system that places no value on individuality. Fires, volcanoes and thick smoke regularly appear in the backgrounds and surrounding landscapes, as civilisations are being stamped out and remoulded.

An article written by New York journalist Andrew Sullivan directed PANG to extracts from Plato's “The Republic”, providing seemingly stark warnings in the form of a dialogue between Socrates and his friends. They discuss the cyclical nature of different political systems and their implications, as each will inevitably break down and pave the path for the next, concluding that when democracy has gone “too far”, tyranny will rise up from its ashes.
