About
Part of Ed Thompson’s on going research and work with the rarest of films, Kodak Aerochrome colour Infrared, ‘The Red Forest’ is part of the ‘Unseen’ and depicts images of the Chernobyl site and the ghostly village of Pluckley in Kent. The films unique qualities are to see and capture beyond the visible spectrum, making Ed’s images compelling, haunting and truly outstanding to look at.
“In The Red Forest (2012); Thompson assesses the condition of the most radioactive forest in the world. Colour infrared film originally had many varied applications, one of which was its use in the documentation and study of forests. Like other parts of The Unseen Thompson has tried to push the limits of the films intended purpose. The film also appears to have been effected by the radiation; tiny black specks cover the film emulsion. This only occurred when the film was used in Chernobyl and does not seem to have happened when the film was used in other parts of the world.”
Ed Thompson has been a freelance photojournalist for the past twelve years; his work is widely published in Guardian, Independent, National Geographic and more.
