This autumn, Brainchild brings The Playground, a large-scale moving sculpture, to Copeland Park for Peckham Festival.
About
Brainchild’s most ambitious commission to date, the artwork is the result of a recent collaboration between installation artist Kristi Minchin and product designer Oscar Murray, assisted by recent graduate Natalie Seo.
Bouncing off Nils Norman’s theory that adventure playgrounds are radical spaces for social interaction, The Playground presents the opportunity for visitors to connect through play. The piece references traditional adventure playgrounds, with a swing, roundabout and seesaw connected around a central platform of sculptural forms. However its bright, acidic colour palette and unexpected silhouette are far from familiar.
Only when all the playground components are used is the centre of the piece fully set in motion. So, people of all ages are invited to come and play together to realise the sculpture's full potential. A colourful host for collaborative energy, The Playground presents an opportunity for joyful new encounters.
Over the weekend of the Peckham Festival The Playground will be animated by a programme of performances that respond to the work’s themes of community and playfulness. Expect to see playful improvisation by the Yonis, a contemporary dance collective; and work by Slam The Poet & Oli Haylett exploring intimacy in the modern world through soundscapes and rhythmic poetry.
