Aspex is excited to announce the opening of their brand new exhibition, The Platform Graduate Award 2020.

About

The Platform Graduate Award presents the work of 12 talented artists launching their artistic careers after leaving University. Part of a regional initiative led by Contemporary Visual Art Network South East (CVAN South East), Platform aims to support emerging talent at a key moment of transition, and for this year’s graduates in such challenging times this opportunity feels more critical than ever.

Aspex is delighted to announce that this year’s selected artists are: Louise Hall and Evie Redwood (Arts University Bournemouth); Chloe Davies and Daniel Martirossian (University of Chichester); Megan Georgia Smith and Kayleigh Pyner (Solent University, Southampton); Caitlin Jackson and Ellen Ball (UCA Farnham); Caitlin Holford and Katie Novell (University of Portsmouth); and Emma Siân Davies and Maryam Zahra Kazimi (Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton).

Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex said,

“Platform is a highlight of our annual calendar at Aspex, but this year the exhibition has taken on a greater sense of importance and urgency, as students have left universities without an opportunity to show their work publicly in real life. While we’ve all enjoyed online cultural experiences these last few months, the pandemic has shown us more than ever the value of engaging with artworks in person. We are thrilled to work with and support these 12 recent graduates and to create a platform for them, from which we know they will flourish as professionals.”

The artwork in this year’s exhibition includes painting, drawing, photography, print, sculpture, video, installation and interactive online works. Grappling with questions about identity, social justice, health and life in lockdown, this new generation of artists share an insight into their navigation of what is being described by some as the new normal.

One artist in the exhibition at Aspex will also be nominated for The Platform Graduate Award. Established in 2012 the prize includes a £2000 bursary and mentoring, and is awarded to an outstanding graduate from one of the regional higher education partners. Aspex has a strong track record for nominating previous winners including Imogen Marooney, a Winchester School of Art Graduate in 2019 and UCA Farnham graduate Josephine Rock in 2018.

The selection panel for this year’s prize includes guest judge, Turner Prize winning artist Tai Shani, alongside representatives from the four participating galleries. The winner will be announced on Saturday 5 December at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton. Led by CVAN South East The Platform Graduate Award is a partnership between four galleries: Aspex, Modern Art Oxford, Phoenix Art Space in Brighton and Turner Contemporary in Margate.

Alongside Platform, Aspex’s Craft Space presents In Season, a quartet of female-led creativity. The gallery has selected four artists from the 2019 Hothouse cohort - The Crafts Councils’ development programme providing creative and business support for emerging makers. The exhibition will showcase multi-disciplinary works by Marie Jones (Kochi Kochi), Charlotte Kidger, Iris De La Torre and Dalia James.

Due to Covid-19 government guidelines there will be no Private View event for the exhibitions. The artists in Platform will take part in an online Artists Talk via Zoom on Sunday 27th September, 19.00hrs. Tickets for this event are free and need to be booked in advance on Eventbrite.

Access to visit the exhibition at Aspex is via the Vernon Gate entrance to Gunwharf Quays.  Full Know Before You Go information and a Queue Jump Pass can be found on the Aspex website.   Visitors do not need to book in advance but will need to provide contact details for Test & Trace on entering the building. The cafe and shop at Aspex are also open to visitors.
