The 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table of chemical elements by Dmitri Mendeleev is celebrated on 2 double-sided street banners.
If you go out of White City Underground Station, stand on the pavement and look up at two tall lampposts to the left and right, you will see Street Banners. Designed by Emma Davis from Riverside Artists Group they celebrate the 150th anniversary of The Periodic Table of chemical elements. Visible to buses, pedestrians and passing traffic, this is a significant collaboration of arts and science, and a first for art on banners for H&F ArtsFest.
What do you say when Oxygen, Hydrogen, Sulphur, Sodium and Phosphorous walk into a bar? OH Snap…
The inspiration and images for the design were developed through a fun hands-on art and science-making workshop for local White City families held at nearby Imperial College’s Invention Rooms. Led by Imperial Research Chemist Richard Kong and Riverside Artist Group Emma Davis, the children creatively explored fascinating experiments using elements from the Periodic Table. It is these elements, invisible but essential, that make-up our extraordinary but everyday world.
From the workshop, Emma developed designs to form artworks that were printed on to the banners and installed on those lamp posts.
The Periodic Table continues to be widely used in chemistry, nuclear physics and other sciences.
