About
The Nib Uncapped Celebratory Opening Weekend presents fifteen events over four days involving leading poets, musicians and actors.
Friday’s programme starts with a special reading ‘Something to Write Home About’ followed by ‘Incertus’, a staged reading performed by students of Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University. Highlights of a packed day include a specially commissioned piece of music, ‘ Lifecycle’ performed by a nine-piece ensemble of world renowned and traditional musicians, followed by a performance by singer-songwriter Paul Brady.
On Saturday 1 October, Beowulf, as translated by Seamus Heaney, will be performed by Rough Magic and the Tron Theatre groups. This adaptation is directed by award-winning Lynne Parker and features the original soundscape by Dennis Colhessy. The day marks the local launch of a new anthology of lullabies ‘All Through The Night’ edited by Marie Heaney with readings. The inaugural weekend’s poetry reading brings together Michael Longley and Sinéad Morrissey. In the first part of two discussions, Tom Paulin, Christopher Reid and Julie O’Callaghan share their memories of Seamus Heaney entitled, ‘Remembering Seamus.’
The Sunday programme starts at dawn with an outdoor performance of ‘Mycenae Lookout’ at the spectacular setting of Lough Beg. Poet John Montague, The Chieftain’s lead musician Paddy Maloney and harpist Tríona Marshall perform their collaborative album ‘The Wild Dog Rose’. Internationally acclaimed cellist, Christian Poltéra performs Bach’s first three cello suites. Entitled ‘Bach to Broagh’, the recital is intercut with readings of Seamus Heaney’s poems. ‘Remembering Seamus’ continues with discussion from Pater Fallon, Olivia O’Leary and John Horgan.
Monday 3 October sees a performance of Seamus Heaney’s play, ‘The Burial at Thebes’ by Off The Cuff Theatre Group, as an excellent close to the inaugural celebrations.
There are workshops throughout the weekend and selected craft items by leading regional makers for sale in the HomePlace shop.
