About
With the current boom in natural history, it is said that memories are sometimes the best thing about our encounters with nature, offering a broad radius of activity which has long since affected the arts, and often reflects the life of the artist. This modest show partly demonstrates its diversity.
For the five artists in this thematic exhibition the world of nature is more of an ongoing resource, where visual and tactile experiences are held in reserve for projects yet to come. Some artists explore nature purely for ideas, while others sensitively employ the earth's renewable resources.
Japanese born Michi Suzuki has lived in London for some years, and studied ceramics at the Royal College of Art. Lizzie Farey lives in Scotland, studied in Cardiff College of Art and is self-taught in basket-making. Anne Harrington Rees was born and brought up in Kilkenny, studied at UCD in Dublin, and works with renewable fibres such as flax, jute and linen thread. Clifford Rainey was also born in Ireland, and studied glass at the Royal College of Art, and now lives in California; whilst Carol Kingsbury Gwizdak has carved out a successful career in rural Wales, employing unorthodox materials for wearable jewellery that firmly focuses on ecological issues. The exhibition is curated by Ralph Turner.
