The Naturalness of Strange Things the line that (...) considers four artists’ approaches to translation and alternative meaning. The exhibition will unfold with new interventions on consecutive weeks.

About

In his treatise Elements, Euclid defines a line as a "breadthless length... which lies evenly with the points on itself". This idea of a circuitous, infinite connection, inclusion and enclosing, is the basis for this reactive exhibition, in which Sally Morfill and Ana Čavić, Tamarin Norwood and Louise Stern are points on a line that lengthens and reshapes over the three weeks of the show. For the individual artists in this exhibition, straight lines collapse, reconfigure and acquire breadth through their respective approaches to translation.

the line that (draws)

From April 9th, the starting point of the exhibition is the work of Sally Morfill who began to redraw the lines from Henri Michaux’s ‘asemic’ writing, particularly Alphabet (1927), transferring them to vinyl and producing a series of drawings and sculptures from the remnants; the unwanted parts of a translation. Ana Čavić has taken the lines, Morfill’s vinyl leftovers, reconfiguring them to create a series of poems, which blur the border between writing and drawing. Working repeatedly with the same elements, these translations produce multiple meanings from the same starting point.

the line that (breathes)

From April 16th, the exhibition expands with Tamarin Norwood’s piece A Line Describing a Curve Describing a Curve (2013), as a continuation of this discourse. Remnant of a pre-existing work, the film shows an object as it recovers and breathes, regaining form to become an altered version of its original self.

the line that (speaks)

On April 23rd, Extractions, a film by Louise Stern provides a second intervention. With emotional punctuation removed and sewn together, the film asks us to ponder disjointed conversations where two speakers misunderstand each other.

The Naturalness of Strange Things the line that (...) will develop in three phases:
9.04.15 6-9pm
the line that (draws): Sally Morfill and Ana Čavić

16.04.15 6.30-8.30pm
the line that (breathes): Sally Morfill, Ana Čavić and Tamarin Norwood

23.04.15 6.30-8.30pm
the line that (speaks): Sally Morfill, Ana Čavić, Tamarin Norwood and Louise Stern.

Five Years will remain open from Friday-Sunday, 1-6pm.
