About
NICOLAS MAVRIKAKIS AND NATASCHA NIEDERSTRASS present "De l'assassinat considéré comme un des beaux-arts: le meurtre de la baronne" at Hangar 7826, a project born of a shared interest in art history.
The work proposed by MAVRIKAKIS and NIEDERSTRASS invites us to reflect on who is the author, or perhaps even the authors, of the famous work bearing the name Fountain (1917). Several documents lead us to believe that the authorship of this manipulated urinal, one of the first major conceptual works, is not simply attributable to Marcel Duchamp. Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, née Elsa Hildegard Plötz (1874-1927), may well have been involved in the genesis of this work...
Through a combination of photography, sound, sculpture and text, this duo work by MAVRIKAKIS and NIEDERSTRASS takes over the space of HANGAR 7826, challenging the narrative of art history. By revisiting personal archives and legal files, they will reinterpret, sometimes poetically and metaphorically, sometimes ironically and critically, the clues that enable a rereading of an often murderous art history.
