THE MOTHER OF ALL VICES

New work by Sarra Badel, Chiara Cassar, Amanda Pamela Nicole and Siannon Saunders

About

"Laziness is the mother of all vices"

Taking inspiration from two texts by Mladen Stilinovic and Kazimir Malevic, this collaborative group show explores re-purposed video, sculpture and photography to create ambiguous new works that re-frame interpretations of the body, the domestic environment and a range of organic forms.

The Mother of all Vices interrogates the space between art and labour, between institution and freedom and explores the idea that there is no art without laziness; a shared interest between the four participating artists.

"Knowing about laziness is not enough, it must be practiced and perfected"

Sarra Badel explores through her practice the construction of the female self in contemporary culture. She looks into familiar objects raising these questions: how is the female body represented and idealized in western contemporary societies? What are the interactions between feminine identity and the domestic environment? The appropriation of materials and objects of everyday life is essential to the composition of her installations. She is particularly interested in exploring the tension that arises when using cold, synthetic materials to discuss the human body and the intimate development of the self.

Chiara Cassar explores materials and their agency through sculpture and installation. Her work is created through process, repetition and manipulation of materials. This strips down the work from being identifiable; creating an abstract and alien-like quality. The sculptures are then site-specifically allocated to form a narrative between the object and environment, further questioning this ‘non-life’ controlling influence materials possess on humanity and the world around us.

Amanda Pamela Nicole includes her life and experience as a martial artist in her art, she questions the relationship to the body, its physicality and {the relationship between different bodies}. She started when she was a boxer and is now getting inspired by the intimate world of Brazilian jiujitsu. Exploring the ambiguous, the uncomfortable is what interests her at the moment. People usually try to avoid these places and playing with the limits is where it gets the most interesting.

Siannon Saunders works across photography, painting and sculpture to explore embarrassment, failure and unfiltered ego, often taking the form of confessional component-based installations which, where possible, are built site specifically. Found objects and re-purposed imagery are utilised to create non-linear, temporal narratives from a somewhat unreliable narrator.
