In The Measurement of Presence exhibition curated by Benno Tempel for the Dutch Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale, artists Remy Jungerman (b. 1959) and Iris Kensmil (b. 1970) investigate multiple cultural traditions and histories, and bring them into dialogue with the present. Their transnational perspectives across painting, installation, sculpture and deep archival research, assemble influences from a multitude of backgrounds. In their works, the artists combine the inspiration they find in 20th century modernism and the avant-garde with elements from less well known radical traditions and positions such as Caribbean spirituality and Black diaspora feminism. As a result, the artists ambitiously measure the possibilities of aesthetic and political transformations that take place at the interchange of Caribbean and global modernities.
TrAIN Research Centre (Transnational Art, Identity and Nation) at University of the Arts London in collaboration with the Mondriaan Fund, Netherlands are hosting an international panel discussion at Chelsea College of Arts on November 15th. A distinguished panel of curators, writers and thinkers will explore the questions opened up in The Measurement of Presence by focusing on transnational perspectives that will contextualise this project within ideas about Black artists and modernism, the influence of the Caribbean in shaping global modernities and debates about the radical presence of blackness in contemporary art.
