About

From 3rd June - 1st July Block 336 will host the Marmite Prize for Painting which is celebrating its tenth year. During this time they have delivered five editions of the prize. For the 2016 exhibition, 39 paintings have been shortlisted.

The shortlisted paintings were selected by Marcus Cope (Painter and Co-founder & Curator of the Marmite Prize for Painting), Jane Hayes Greenwood (Artist and Director of Block 336, London, UK), Aoife Ruane (Director of Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, Ireland). Daniel Sturgis (Artist, Curator and Course Director in Painting, Camberwell College of Arts, London) and Colin Martin (Artist and School Principal at Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, Ireland).

Phillip Allen, Vanessa Jackson RA and Mark O’Kelly will be joining Marmite Prize IV winner Brian Cheeswright on the panel to select the prizewinners.

The winners will be announced during the opening of the exhibition at 8pm on Friday 3rd June. The Marmite Prize is unique in that the prizewinner receives an artwork. This year the winner will receive a sculpture made specially and donated by Alison Wilding RA.

This year marks the introduction of a Student Prize. The selected student will win a month long residency at Bon Volks studios in Margate and £500 cash towards travel and expenses. The exhibiting students are also still eligible to win the main prize.

Each year the Marmite Prize has been dedicated to an artist admired by the exhibition curators, influencing the exhibition hang in some way. This year Mary Heilmann is their star.

Following the exhibition at Block 336, the prize will tour to Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda, Ireland 8th July - 10th September.

A catalogue has been published by Susak Press to accompany the exhibitions and is available to pre-order.
