Stanley Spencer was one of the most original artists of the 20th century. Famous for portrayals of biblical events taking place in his native village of Cookham Berkshire, he was also an official war artist and a fine painter of landscapes and portraits.

About

His colourful personal life inspired some revolutionary nudes and figure paintings. This talk will explore the immensely varied work of this intriguing artist, whose paintings are both life affirming and strangely moving, with particular emphasis upon the paintings and drawings on display at Jerwood Gallery.

Ann Danks moved to Cookham, the birthplace of Stanley Spencer, when she was 21 years old and has lived there ever since.  She become steeped in the history of the village and its most famous resident and has compiled several books on the subject: Cookham Archive Photographs  (1998) and Cookham Voices - an Oral History (2002). Ann became a custodian at the Stanley Spencer Gallery 15 years ago and took over responsibility for the archives at the time of the major refurbishment in 2006.  “ My work at the Gallery is fascinating and varied - in addition to making the archives available to students, academics, authors and the general public I also help to organise exhibitions, support education and access work and give talks on Stanley Spencer both within the Gallery and further afield. In this role I have provided material and information for many recent publications and articles about Stanley Spencer. In addition to my work at the Gallery I run courses on Stanley Spencer for the Workers Education Association.”
