Thrown Contemporary is proud to present ‘The Leach Pottery: Living The Legacy’, an exhibition exploring one of the most respected and influential potteries in the world as it is today.

About

I am always mindful that I stand on the shoulders of giants.’ Roelof Uys, Leach Pottery Lead Potter

Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach in St Ives, Cornwall, the Leach Pottery has forged the shape of Studio Pottery in the UK and beyond. Bernard Leach trained first as an artist in London and then as a potter in Japan and became fascinated by the two cultures that seemed so different.  Over the course of fifty years Leach taught, wrote and trained other potters in the great art, combining Japanese and European aesthetics through his work and building his reputation as a key pioneering figure in the ceramics world.

Now guided by Lead Potter Roelof Uys, The Leach Pottery continues to serve as a meeting ground for the exchange of skills and ideas, sought out by potters from all over the world and crafting its team into talented individual potters as well as a skilled collective:

“Working as a team and promoting the spirit of cooperation, we are more effective in the range of pots that we produce. By working on each other’s pots, we shift focus from the individual to the group. As a diverse collective of potters and students from around the world, we are continually learning from one another.”

‘The Leach Pottery: Living The Legacy’ represents the current Leach Pottery team as they honour the traditions before them while working together to evolve their aesthetic, creating work that is unique and that they feel belongs to this era of the Leach Pottery’s enduring legacy.

Each of the team of seven potters will present individual collections while also showing their collective work in the form of the new Leach Standard Ware. An additional bespoke tableware set is also currently being created for an exclusive set of supper clubs that will be hosted in the gallery during the exhibition, offering a very unique first-hand experience of the work of this esteemed pottery.
